Q I offer a subscription option for my services. I hear the government is planning changes to consumer law — what do I need to know?
A You are right that the UK government is consulting on some changes to consumer law as it believes that although consumer law in the UK is generally effective, the law lacks impact in certain key areas and MPs want to “tackle consumer rip-offs and bad business practices”.
It says it has identified two main developments where there is scope to improve consumer rights:
• The rise in online shopping in general and fake reviews in particular.
• An increase in subscription contracts.
The government proposes a series of updates to consumer rights to keep pace with these developments.
